Accutane (isotretinoin) is a medication that is used to treat severe, recalcitrant acne. It is a retinoid, meaning it is derived from vitamin A and is a powerful drug that can have significant side effects. It is typically prescribed for people who have not had success with other forms of acne treatment, such as antibiotics and topical creams.
Accutane works by decreasing the size and output of the oil glands in the skin, which can reduce the number of acne outbreaks. Because of the potential side effects, Accutane is usually a last resort treatment and should be only prescribed by a Dermatologist and after a close monitoring during the treatment.
